Atlanta Motor Speedway, Press Release
HAMPTON, Ga. (October 23, 2006) – A hint of nostalgia is in the air
as the 1988 NEXTEL Cup Series Champion, Bill Elliott, takes the seat
of the #37 R&J Racing Dodge in Atlanta later this week to celebrate
his 30th Anniversary of racing at his hometown track.
Elliott's entry will be fielded out of the same Dawsonville, Ga.
shop from which he and his family operation raced for years. The car
will sport the red and white paint scheme familiar to longtime
Elliott fans and will feature a commemorative logo which marks the
30 year milestone. Elliott’s brother, Ernie, will provide the
powerplant for the effort. Three of the current RJ Racing employees
were part of the championship winning Elliott team of years ago.
“In a lot of ways it will be like the old days of going to race at
Atlanta Motor Speedway,” said Elliott. “It will be fun to be with
these guys and run the red and white car again.”
Elliott went on to further state. “I always get excited to race at
my home track, the fans are so great there and the racing is always
exciting. It is a great race track.”
After starting 39th at Kansas earlier this month, Elliott had a
great run in the Melling Auto Parts sponsored RJ Racing Dodge,
eventually finishing 16th.
“It is good to have someone of Bill’s capability and caliber in the
No. 37 car,” said John Carter, co-owner of RJ Racing. “We honestly
feel like we have a shot at winning anytime Bill gets in the car and
to have him in there for Atlanta, with us being based out of Georgia
is even more special.”
“We look forward to celebrating Bill’s 30 years of racing at Atlanta
Motor Speedway,” said Ed Clark, president and general manager of
Atlanta Motor Speedway. “Bill has a huge following, especially in
Georgia, and this will be a milestone weekend for us and his many
fans.”
